Two excerpts from The Bhagavad Gita, which is a 700-verse scripture that is part of the larger Hindus epic Mahabharata. It is a sacred text of the Hindus. The Bhagavad Gita is set in a narrative framework of a dialogue between prince Arjuna and his guide Lord Krishna, a manifestation of the Supreme God Vishnu. Text n° 1 ( ch. 4, verses 6-8) deals with the concept of Avatara, the descent of God on earth; text n° 2 ( ch.12, 1-7) deals with the practice of self-less devotion to the Supreme God, in order to obtain liberation.

6 - Though I am eternal, imperishable, and the Lord of all beings; yet I (voluntarily) manifest by controlling My own material nature using my Maya.
7 - Whenever there is a decline of Dharma and the rise of Adharma, O Arjuna, then I manifest Myself.
8 -I incarnate from time to time for protecting the good, for transforming the wicked, and for establishing Dharma, the world order.

1-Arjuna said: Lord! of the men who serve [i.e. the Bhaktas] Thee — true in heart — As God revealed; and of the men who serve, Worshipping Thee Unrevealed, Unbodied, Far, Which take the better way of yoga?
2-Krishna. Whoever serve Me — as I show Myself — constantly true, in full devotion fixed, Those hold I very holy.
3-But who serve — Worshipping Me The One, The Invisible,The Unrevealed, Unnamed, Unthinkable, Uttermost, All-pervading, Highest, Sure,
4-who thus adore Me, mastering their sense, Of one set mind to all, glad in all good, these blessed souls come unto Me.
5-Yet, hard The travail is for such as bend their minds to reach the Unmanifest. That viewless path shall scarce be trod by man bearing the flesh!
6-But whereso any doeth all his deeds renouncing self for Me, full of Me, fixed to serve only the Highest, night and day musing on Me
7-him will I swiftly lift Forth from life's ocean of distress and death,
