Introduction
In ancient times, Jews were a people with a religion. The vicissitudes of history led to the dispersion (diaspora in Greek) of Jews despite the creation of the State of Israel, intended as a Jewish State for the Jewish community.

In the Bible (Genesis 32: 25-32), Jacob wrestled with an angel during the whole night. In the morning, the angel, who could not defeat him, gave him the name of Israel.

The synagogues in the Diaspora in the first and second centuries AD

The presence of ancient synagogues is attested from different sources. Some synagogues are known because of archeological excavations. Other synagogues are known through reports in literature, papyri or inscriptions. Their existence show that Jews began to settle out of Judea before the destruction of the Temple and their defeat in the Bar Kokhba revolt.
