Introduction to the module

This module aims to present how Buddhism spread throughout Asia ( and then the world). It adapted itself to different social, political and cultural background, but at the same time it rooted in each civilization, deeply influencing it. Section 1 introduce one of the main historical event that triggered the Buddhism Expansion. Section 2 to 5 offer an overview of the diffusion of Buddhism in South-Asia, China, Japan and Tibet. These sections explain the historical and cultural circumstances of the arrival of Buddhism and its consequences in society, artistic expression, doctrinal development and so on. Finally sec. 6 deals with the change Buddhism undergone in front of Modernity, both in Asia and in the West, focusing on the adaptation to a need of a modern and globalized World. Every section is almost independent from the others even if links and connections are provided and explained to give occasion of comparisons. Even if pivotal concepts are often repeated and there are links inside the text, it is highly advised to preliminary use in class Buddhism Module I, especially with section 1,3,4. Moreover, many references are made to concept explained in sec. 6 and 7 of Buddhism Module I.

Conceptual (knowledge) Objectives:

• Objectif 1 Comprendre les coordonnées spatio-temporelles de base de la diffusion du bouddhisme dans ses différentes branches.
• Objectif 2 Comprendre comment des concepts centraux du bouddhisme comme Bouddha, Bodhisattva, Nirvana, Samsara, Illumination et Moyens habiles ont été développés et exprimés dans différents contextes culturels.
• Objectif 3 Comprendre le rôle fondamental que le bouddhisme a joué dans l’histoire et dans la vie sociale des différentes civilisations d’Asie.
• Objectif 4 Connaître les rituels et les expressions artistiques les plus célèbres apparus au sein du bouddhisme dans les différentes civilisations.
• Objectif 5 Comprendre les changements que la modernité et la mondialisation ont amenés dans le bouddhisme.

Skill objectives:

• Skill 1 Etre capable de lire et de comprendre les informations de base à partir de textes religieux, de symboles et de monuments bouddhiques.
• Skill 2 Etre capable d’employer correctement des termes techniques tels que mythe, rituel, fête, en relation au contexte du bouddhisme.
• Skill 3 Etre capable d’employer de manière critique et de relier l’information obtenue dans ce module à d’autres contextes disciplinaires et culturels.
• Skill 4 Etre capable d’employer de manière critique et de relier l’information obtenue dans ce module à celle trouvée dans les médias et qui porte sur des sujets analogues.

Competence objectives:

• Competence 1: Envisager comme une richesse toute la diversité et le changement interne à une tradition culturelle comme le bouddhisme.
